Healthy Heart Tips!

HEALTHY HEART TIP #1:

Quit smoking. A lot of people are quick to assume that smoking cigarettes only affects their lungs but did you know that 20% of all deaths related to heart disease are a direct effect from smoking cigarettes? Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease, the most popular form of heart disease. People who participate in this habit are 2-4 times more likely to have a heart disease than non-smokers. The amount of cigarettes you smoke does affect your chances. Clearly, the less you smoke the less chance you have. But any smoking puts you at risk. For the non-smokers, try to stay away from people who DO smoke. Second hand smoke is still dangerous to your heart.

HEALTHY HEART TIP #2:

Manage your weight. Between 60-70% of the American population is overweight or obese. This obesity epidemic is definitely putting a strain on the hearts of many, many lives. When a person has excess body fat, all of their systems begin to work slower and less efficient, especially the circulatory system. In order to keep a healthy heart, your blood must flow through the heart and the rest of the body in a swift, smooth motion. By being overweight or obese, this circulation doesn’t happen the way it is supposed to and can put a strain on your heart. Lose any excess weight you have to keep your heart healthy.

HEART HEALTHY TIP #3:

Cut down on your sodium intake. Sodium = salt. Consuming too much sodium in your diet can cause a spike in your blood pressure. If you continue to consume a sodium rich diet, your blood pressure will stay elevated. This increases your risk of developing heart disease. People in American nowadays buy all these packaged foods, which tend to be loaded with sodium. Skip anything that’s packaged like chips, salted nuts, canned veggies, frozen ready-to-eat meals, and canned soups and sauces. Also, keep the table salt consumption low! Don’t add too much extra to your food.

HEART HEALTHY TIP #4:

Check your family history. Aside from smoking habits, weight, and sodium intake, having a family history of heart disease puts you at risk right away. Finding out if you have a relative who suffers from this disease will show you that you are at risk no matter what your lifestyle. If there is a family history, you can follow the necessary precautions to make sure you do not get heart disease.
Heart Healthy Tip #5: Exercise! Wondering how to have a healthy heart? This tip is probably one of the best things you can do for your heart. The heart is a muscle. Just like any other muscle that needs to be worked, your heart needs that exercise too. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each day. This will give the heart muscle just the right amount of exercise it needs to pump blood throughout the body, keeping you healthy and alive!

HEART HEALTHY TIP #6:

Manage your stress. Living a stressful life actually puts a person at risk for developing heart disease. Under stress, everything in your body works differently.
