Some people do not understand the importance of water and how it can affect their overall health tremendously. While drinking a lot of water is important, many of these people may not drink the right amount of water everyday.

People should use 3 litres of water a day, and women should take 2.2 litres a day, according to the Institute of Medicine.

Roughly 70% of the body consists of water, and 71% of the earth's surface is water-covered. As water is abundant throughout the globe, people take it for granted and drinking enough is not included in their list of priorities.

The kidneys are dependent on sufficient water consumption among the various parts of the body. Though the organs are not as sensitive as the heart or the lungs, they have many important functions that help preserve the body's health.

Reasons to Drink Water

Our body's cells and organs require water to function properly. Additionally, this essential fluid controls blood pressure, lubricates the joints, assists with food movement through the intestines and protects the backbone and delicate tissues.

Some of the water the body needs is extracted from foods that contain high water content-like soups, oranges and tomatoes-but mostly from drinking water and other drinks.

When people perform their usual day-to-day tasks, their bodies lose water and need to be replenished. When sweating and urinating, it is clear that water gets lost. However, many don't know it's lost at breathing as well.

Water is the body's best source of fluids, be it drinking from bottle or tap. Diuretic properties allow the organism to release water. Milk and juice is good sources of water, while beverages containing caffeine and alcoholic drugs such as coffee, Soft drink and beer aren't very good.

The Right Amount of Water to Drink 

The required quantity of water to be ingested on a daily basis varies from person to person based on various factors-daily activities and sweat volume. The water consumption that needs to be met is not a universal rule. There is nonetheless a general consensus about the appropriate quantity.

The Institute of Medicine or IOM says that the amount of water that men will take is about 13 cups or 3 litres a day. Women are advised to have 9 cups or about 2.2 litres.

People have always been told to drink eight glasses (eight ounces per glass) a day, which is about 1.9 litres. This is very close to IOM recommendation for women. It is somehow easy to remember, when it comes to water use, the quantity 8 x 8 to put them on the right track.

In addition, water also helps to dissolve nutrients and minerals to make them more readily available to the body. It also discards waste products from the body's system. These two functions make water essential for the kidneys.
